New Hampshire is called the Granite State for good reason. The surface rock is almost all of igneous origin and has been heavily glaciated. The action of glacial plucking, however, particularly on steep Southeast facing slopes of the White Mountains, have created fields of huge boulders with a thin veneer of vegatation on top and irregularly shaped caverns underneath them. Two of these areas have been developed into tourist attractions, Lost River Reservation in Kinsman Notch and Polar Caves.
