In the eastern Adirondacks, there are a few areas where the metamorphasized sandstone has such a high content of soluble minerals that caves can form. The high elevation allows ice formations to persist into the summer in the caves.

There are extensive maze-like caves in the Watertown area as well.

On the Eastern slope of the Tug Hill plateau, a series of streams have cut deeply, forming narrow canyons called Gulfs.
